Context
Patty arrived at the Bronx Zoo as a three-year-old calf and has stayed for more than half a century. Writing on 9 July 2026, the author looks at the difficult choice now facing her keepers: whether to move the aging, solitary elephant to a sanctuary or let her remain in the only home she remembers. The situation follows a broader shift as zoos phase out elephant exhibits, leaving behind animals that belong neither to the wild nor to the city. It is a somber look at what happens when there is no perfect way to mend a lifetime of captivity.
