Context
The Tour de France offers something no other major sporting event does: completely free access to the athletes, right on the playing field. Hundreds of thousands of fans camp on the side of a mountain, drinking and screaming inches away from cyclists moving at top speed. Published on 25 July 2026, Defector's dispatch captures the strange tension built into this setup. Cycling relies entirely on this uncontrollable energy to create its atmosphere, even when those massive crowds inevitably spill over and crash into the race itself.
